Making Digitalisation More Sustainable

Understanding the
Digital Carbon Footprint of SMEs

This Erasmus+ cooperation project brings together partners from Germany and Türkiye to explore the environmental impacts of everyday digital activities, including cloud services and AI. Through knowledge exchange, training and the development of practical tools, we aim to help SMEs and their trainers understand digital carbon footprints and identify opportunities for more sustainable practices.

About

Building Knowledge for Sustainable Digitalisation

The environmental impact of digitalisation is often overlooked, particularly in smaller businesses. This Erasmus+ project explores how cloud services, data storage and AI influence energy use and emissions. By connecting expertise from Germany and Türkiye, we aim to build practical knowledge, develop accessible learning materials and make digital sustainability easier for SMEs and their trainers to understand.

Understanding Digital Impacts

We bring together existing knowledge and practical experiences to explore how everyday digital activities contribute to energy use and emissions, helping SMEs recognise where their digital carbon footprint comes from.

Knowledge Exchange and Training

Through Spark Sessions, workshops and collaborative development of learning materials, we connect SMEs, trainers and experts to discuss challenges, share experiences and identify practical approaches to more sustainable digital practices.

Cross-Border Partnership

ELLIC, Steinbeis SIT and IAD connect expertise in ESG, education, responsible digitalisation and climate action across Germany and Türkiye. The partnership jointly develops and tests accessible approaches that can be used by SMEs and sustainability professionals in different sectors.

Project Goals

Building Awareness and Understanding

The project aims to strengthen the knowledge of SMEs, trainers and sustainability professionals about the energy use and emissions associated with everyday digital activities, including cloud services and AI.

Developing Practical Approaches

By exchanging expertise and working with SMEs, the project develops and tests guidelines and an easy-to-use toolkit for recognising digital carbon hotspots and exploring more resource-efficient ways of working.

Supporting Sustainability Documentation

The project will develop simple templates and procedures to help SMEs document digital sustainability actions and communicate their efforts to clients and partners in line with SME-oriented reporting approaches.
